Assistant Landfill Manager

The Assistant Landfill Manager position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating landfill operations and employees to ensure that performance goals are met while maintaining compliance with the EPA. Landfill Managers ensure the highest standards of environmental safety and environmental compliance are met while minimizing operational costs and maximizing productivity. The hours and level of responsibility may vary by location.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF POSITION:
  • Manage landfill operations and operate equipment in a safe manner in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and company policies and ensure the same of others.
  • Develop and maintains operational goals and plans to include all program requirements, labor hours.
  • Maintain landfill to meet requirements for EPA inspections and County Health Department
  • Monitor and enforce quality and safety standards and ensure all compliance goals are met or exceeded.
  • Ensure production and quality control standards are met. Ensure all established costs and delivery commitments are met.
  • Assist with developing budgets and cost controls, and obtain data regarding types, quantities, specifications.
  • Provide guidance to the development of the landfill, including staffing requirements, facility needs, and tooling and equipment needs.
  • Coordinate landfill activities with all other functions of the organization and suppliers to obtain optimum productions and utilization of human resources, machines, and equipment.
  • Review production and operating reports and direct the resolution of operations and maintenance problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.
  • Perform administrative activities associated with the effective management of the landfill, including compiling, storing, and retrieving production data for reports.
  • Determine responsibilities and scheduling of employees.
  • Train all organizational and staff positions to accomplish Company and county plans.
  • Perform and conduct performance evaluations, monitor and track employee attendance, complete disciplinary actions/meetings, and all other required documentation relating to performance management.
  • Maintain proper records and files including all compliance and personnel records.
  • Oversee operation of trash fill area and complete necessary daily reports.
  • Ensure equipment preventive maintenance and repairs are being completed timely and efficiently.
  • Order lubes, fuel, and parts as needed.
  • Continuously monitor equipment to ensure proper operation and minimal down time. Clean waste from equipment body and wheels or tracks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have previous management experience
  • Must have waste industry experience
  • Computer experience preferred
  • Excellent customer relations and personnel management skills
  • Must be able to read and understand landfill set grades using a surveyor’s instrument
  • Must be familiar with EPA requirements regarding landfill
  • Minimum 5 years heavy equipment operations experience
  • Minimum 3 years landfill experience or equivalent
  • Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) certification, preferred
  • Must demonstrate experience in problem solving, leadership, quality management, planning, organizing
  • Ability to work weekends and/or holidays
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to operate all landfill equipment proficiently
  • Surveying and GPS experience preferred


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Bachelors’ degree or Associates degree from an accredited college or technical school; preferred
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language well enough to communicate, understand, and respond to questions, regulations, policies, and safety training
  • Must be able to produce satisfactory pre-employment drug test and background check results


PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Moderate exposure to noise, heat/cold, dust and fumes as found in a landfill facility
  • Exposure to extreme weather conditions
  • Exposure to residential, commercial, and special waste
